Prof. Erdal Karaoz, MD – Genetic
Having completed his university education at Dicle University in 1986, Erdal Karaöz, MD completed his “PhD” education in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology in 1994. “Associate Professor” in 1996 and “Prof.” got their titles. Working in the field of “Stem Cell, Tissue Engineering and Gene Therapies” since 2000, Erdal Karaöz, MD conducted studies on “Embryonic Stem Cell and Islet Transplantation” at Harvard University in Boston, USA in 2005.
He has 4 published books, 14 book chapters, 10 of which are international, and 190 published articles, 133 of which are international. Karaöz (Google Scholar H index: 34, Number of citations: 4073) founded the “Kocaeli University (KOU) Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Application Center” (KÖGEM), which is the first institutional R&D center in the field of stem cells in Turkey in 2006. has established. During his work at KÖGEM, he organized 23 national and international courses on “Stem Cell, Tissue Engineering and Endometrium-Embryo Co-Culture” with the participation of approximately 400 academicians and scientists. In this process, he worked as an executive, researcher and consultant in many national and international projects, 30 of which were TÜBİTAK. He has worked as a Project Consultant-Panelist and External Arbitrator for many institutions, especially Tübitak, and continues to do so.
He took charge as the founding Head of the “Stem Cell Department” within the body of Kocaeli University Health Sciences Institute in 2010 and provided the first Postgraduate (Master’s) Education in the field of “Stem Cell” in Turkey. In the following years, he started the “PhD” program.
Erdal Karaöz, MD serves as a referee for many national and international scientific journals, as well as on the editorial boards of some of them. He has given conferences as an invited speaker at nearly 200 national and international congresses.
He voluntarily retired from this duty, which he continued until October 1, 2014, and started to work as Liv Hospital / Istanbul, Regenerative Medicine, Stem Cell Production Centers Supervisor.
Prof. Erdal Karaöz, MD served as the founding chairman of the board of directors of the “Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy Association” between 2013 and 2016, and still serves as a member of the Board of Directors. He is currently a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences Stem Cell Working Group. Prof. Erdal Karaöz, MD mainly focused on the immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, neovascularization and fine structure properties of Mesenchymal Stem Cells obtained from various tissues and organs, as well as the beta cell replacement applications of embryonic and induced pluripotent (IPSCs) stem cells in the treatment of diabetes. -D continues its studies. He has been a consultant in the establishment process of many national and international stem cell laboratories until today. Currently, he manages the processes that require or do not require ministry approval for people with various diseases to benefit from cellular therapy options with human transplantable cells produced in the GMP (Good Manufacture Practice) Lab at the “Regenerative Medicine Center”, of which he is the director of Private Liv Hospital. Prof. Erdal Karaöz, MD, “Duchenn Muscular Dystrophy”, “Spinocerebellar ataxia”, “Frederich ataxia”, “Non-progressive congenital myopathy”, “spinal cord injury”, “Retinitis pigmentosa”, “ischemia-induced hypoxic encephalopathy”, “head trauma,” approved by the Ministry of Health Many clinical trials titled Efficacy of Allogeneic Umbilical Cord Matrix-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells for many diseases that cannot be treated with today’s known medical methods, such as encephalomalacia”, “cerebral palsy” and “subacute sclerosing pan encephalitis (SSPE), Multiple sclerosis, Autism, Systemic sclerosis. and/or taking part in research projects. In the first year of the Covid 19 pandemic, he managed the laboratory part of the stem cell application processes, in accordance with the ministry-approved cGMP standards, to around 400 intensive care patients who lost all known treatment options. Prof. Erdal Karaöz, MD served as the founding vice-rector of İstinye University, which was established with the law numbered 6642 on 01.04.2015, until 30.12.2019.
